When parents come to see us, the first thing they usually notice is how quiet it is. Not quiet like a class where everyone has to be silent, quiet like a house where there are not too many people in one place.
Small is not just cosy
With a limited intake we know every child's name, personality and needs. That sounds like a soft advantage, but it has hard consequences.
A teacher who knows twenty children notices when one of them is different today. She notices the child who has not got to the blocks in three days. She notices who struggles to hold a pencil, long before it becomes a problem.
Observation instead of testing
We follow the National Curriculum Framework, and the framework does not prescribe activities. It gives us a way to plan purposefully and observe closely.
That observation only works if the group is small enough to really watch. In a big class, observation becomes a checklist. In a small class it stays what it should be: someone who knows your child and pays attention.
What it means for the child
- More individual attention, every day, without anyone having to fight for it.
- Developmental needs spotted sooner, while they are still easy to support.
- A familiar face at every transition, which builds safety and so makes learning possible.
- Room to choose for themselves, because there is enough material and enough space.
What it means for the parent
You speak to the people who were actually with your child, not to someone relaying a report. When we call you, we know what we are talking about.
Families get to know each other too. That is the part that surprises most parents: the other parents become familiar, and the children's friendships stretch beyond the school day.
Small is a choice
Our premises could handle more children than we take in. We keep it that way on purpose, because it is exactly why parents choose us. It also means places are limited and that we work through the waiting list in the order enquiries come in.
